More Information on the Swedish Language
Swedish is the national language of Sweden and the first language for the overwhelming majority of roughly eight million Swedish born inhabitants and has been and acquired by one million immigrants. In Finland Swedish is spoken as a first language by about 5.5% or about 300,000 people (as of 2004). The Finnish-Swedish minority is concentrated in the coastal areas of southern and western Finland. There are small numbers of Swedish speakers in other countries, such as Swedish descendants in Argentina and Brazil, who have maintained their ancestral names and language.
Swedish is considered the “main language” in Sweden and its use is officially recommended for local and state government, but not actually enforced by law. Swedish is the sole official language of Åland, an autonomous province under the sovereignty of Finland, where 95% of the 26,000 inhabitants speak Swedish as their first language. In Finland, Swedish is the second national language after Finnish. Swedish is also one of the official languages of the European Union.
